Hiroshima proposed as venue for G7 summit in 2023

Hiroshima Prefecture Governor Hidehiko Yuzaki and Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui handed letters of petition to Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimama Hayashi on Thursday to choose their city as the venue for the 2023 G7 Leaders' Summit.

Report informs, citing RIA Novosti, that Matsui said his city is ideal for holding major international events.

"In addition, it would be effective to discuss various issues of international importance, accepting the reality of the consequences of atomic bombings in a city that already symbolizes peace," the Kyodo agency quoted the mayor as saying.

The letter also noted that in 2016, a summit of foreign ministers of the G7 countries was held in Hiroshima.

In turn, the prime minister noted that several cities are expressing their desire to host the summit of the heads of the G7 countries and that he would like to choose what would suit the majority of citizens. At the same time, he did not specify which cities announced such an intention.
