FT: European carmakers lose €8B due to US tariffs

The European auto industry's losses exceeded €8 billion after the US imposed higher tariffs on EU car imports, Report informs referring to the Financial Times.

It is noted that, based on the results of last year and the first three months of this year, Volkswagen suffered the largest losses, estimating losses at €3.6 billion.

BMW lost approximately €2.1 billion, Mercedes-Benz €1.3 billion, and Stellantis suffered losses of approximately €1.2 billion.

Analysts estimate that if tariffs are increased again to 25%, German automakers Volkswagen, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz could lose an additional €2.6 billion as early as 2026.

Meanwhile, the European auto industry is preparing for a possible new round of trade tensions between Washington and Brussels.

The US raised tariffs on European cars from 2.5% to 27.5% in April 2025.

Following the conclusion of the US-EU trade agreement in August of that year, the rate was reduced to 15%.

However, on May 1, 2026, US President Donald Trump announced an increase in tariffs on imported cars and trucks from the EU to 25%, citing the failure of European partners to fulfill their obligations.
