From the beginning of the millennium until 2019, the EU population grew steadily, mostly due to migration, Report informs, citing the EUROSTAT.
This trend was interrupted in 2020, when the total EU population declined from 447.3 million on 1 January 2020 to 447.0 on 1 January 2021, most likely due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Other interesting facts in this publication are that the population in the EU is ageing: the share of those aged 80 and over has almost doubled in the last 20 years, from 3.4% in 2001 to 5.9% in 2020.
The authors predict that by 2080 the EU population will decline to 419 million.
