EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen faces fierce opposition

Both left-wing and right-wing opposition members have come out strongly against the re-election of Ursula von der Leyen as President of the European Commission (EC).

According to Report, Manon Aubry, a French MEP from the left-wing party, La France Insoumise, and co-chair of the Left group in the European Parliament, delivered a scathing critique of von der Leyen's tenure. "You should be standing in court today, not addressing the European Parliament," Aubry declared, addressing von der Leyen directly. She accused the Commission President of failing to fulfill any of her commitments during her first term.

The opposition from the right was equally fierce. Ewa Zajączkowska-Hernik, a Polish MEP representing the right-wing Europe of Nations and Freedom group, didn't mince words.

Electing von der Leyen as head of the European Commission "was a mistake," she stated, arguing that her presidency had led to the destruction of the European economy.

"Europeans are becoming poorer," Zajączkowska-Hernik added, concluding with the stark statement: "For what you've done, you deserve prison, not re-election."
