Energoatom president reveals how NPPs are protected in Ukraine

“There are 3 NPPs on the territory of Ukraine. The Zaporizhzhia NPP is located in the occupied territory. As it is controlled by the Russians, anything can happen at this station. Our employees work in the other 2 stations and they are protected by our National Guard,” Petro Kotin, president of Ukraine's state-run nuclear company, Energoatom, told Report.

According to him, the stations have an echeloned defense system: “The project is protected by a five-fold defense system. A man-made tragedy like the incident at the Kakhovka HPP is likely to occur. Taking into account the firing of the NPP, the possibility of leakage of radioactive substances is not excluded. But our staff is working there, our monitoring systems are operating. Therefore, if such an accident occurs, immediate measures will be taken to localize the danger and eliminate the consequences of the accident. As for the Zaporizhzhia NPP, this station is under the control of the Russians, and if something happens there, we will not be able to react.”
