China suspends seafood imports from Taiwan

Authorities in Mainland China have suspended the import of seafood, which is exported by more than 100 Taiwanese companies, Report informs via TASS.

The ban affected products totaling over NT$6 billion ($196 million). The main losses in this case will be incurred by companies associated with the fishery of squid, as well as Pacific saury and tuna, said Chen Jizhong, chairman of the Island's Agricultural Council.

The suspension of deliveries is said to be caused by a new customs clearance system in the PRC, which requires exporters to go through a more complicated registration procedure.

The Taiwanese authorities are currently investigating the required documents to resolve the issue. If Beijing refuses to make concessions on this issue, Taipei does not rule out filing a complaint with the World Trade Organization.
