That planned fiscal 2022 budget topline is up from the more than $704 billion allocated by lawmakers for this fiscal year. But it's unlikely to satisfy factions of Republican defense hawks seeking to continue significant increases in military spending and progressive Democrats who want to enact steep cuts to the defense budget.

The White House is set to release the broad outlines of its fiscal 2022 budget submission on Friday. The proposal is limited to President Joe Biden's discretionary spending request and will lay out proposed funding levels for federal agencies, including the Defense Department. A more detailed budget will be released later in the spring.
