The state police in Latvia have detained 16 people for various law offenses during the unauthorized action of protest against mandatory vaccination and anti-coronavirus measures held in Riga on Monday, police chief Armands Ruks said, Report informs, citing TASS.

"At least six cases of petty hooliganism were initiated. According to the information so far, 16 people have been detained. Four criminal cases have been initiated into the assault on police officers - two State Police officers and two municipal police officers. There are no serious injuries, but the facts remain as they are: the police asked for medical help," he said on Latvian TV, adding that the rest of the violations were related to non-compliance with epidemiological norms. In addition, the police are assessing the responsibility of the event organizers.

The organizer of the protest action was the oppositional deputy of the Seim (parliament) of the republic Aldis Gobzems. After consultations with law enforcement agencies last week, Riga City Council did not permit to hold the announced event.
