Euronews prepares report on restoration work in Lachin

Euronews has prepared a report on the restoration work in Lachin, Report informs.

The author of the report notes that Lachin City in the west of Azerbaijan looks like a huge construction site.

"Everywhere you look, you can see attempts to erase the scars of the last all-out war between Armenia and Azerbaijan... Tanks have been replaced by construction trucks. Huge amounts of money have been invested in restoration and new constructions... In order to return the people who were displaced from here," Euronews correspondent Anelise Borges said.

The journalist also talked to Lachin resident Hikmat Mammadov.

“This is the house of my great-grandparents. And this is the house of my grandparents,” shows Hikmat Mammadov.

The house of Hikmat’s family is also there.

- You say that you were not born here, but you feel like you come from Lachin. Why?

Hikmat Mammadov: "My parents, my grandparents always talked about Lachin."

- What did they tell you?

Hikmat Mammadov: "That they felt bad. That they always yearned for Lachin."

Hikmat also showed the Euronews correspondent the house that belonged to his grandparents, where his mother, uncles and aunts were born and raised.

But, as noted in the report, there were more painful moments. For example, searching for the graves of grandparents in the nearest cemetery:

"The cemetery was filled with graves ... the distance between them was very short. This is the first, second. And as you can see, the third is completely dug out. Even under the trees, there were graves. When we returned here, the place was filled with bones .... Human bones. These were the remains of our grandfathers, grandmothers, loved ones... our youth... How to understand this?" said one of the returned residents of Lachin.

"At the moment, incomprehensible pain may be the only thing that unites the two sides. While negotiations between the leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia continue, the road to lasting peace must pass through people," the author of the report noted.
