David Merkel: International community should help restore infrastructure on liberated Azerbaijani lands

The international community has failed in promoting peace between Azerbaijan and Armenia, being unable to cope with this task for almost 30 years, Deputy Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs at the US Department of State David Merkel told Report on the sidelines of VIII Global Baku Forum.

Now, in his opinion, the international community should try to promote the development of relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia, as well as the restoration of infrastructure in the liberated territories.

It is also necessary to work on the political aspects so that the two countries finally come to a peace treaty, he noted. The US plays an important role in this issue, but neighboring Turkey and Russia can also contribute to this, Merkel said.
