"As you know, after the 44-day victorious counter-offensive operation, Azerbaijan liberated the territories of its ancestors that had been under Armenian occupation for 28 years, restoring territorial integrity within internationally recognized borders. As a result, Azerbaijan also regained its territories along the border with Iran, illegally held by Armenia," Director General of Baku International Sea Trade Port CJSC Taleh Ziyadov said in an interview with foreign media.

According to him, this makes it possible to rebuild the Baku - Alat - Horadiz - Meghri - Julfa - Nakhichevan railway line:

"This line partially passes through Armenia; in the 1990s, the section of this line between Julfa and Horadiz was dismantled by the occupation forces.

"Why is the above railway line important?

"The revival of this line could open a new route to Iran, towards the Middle East. I want to point out that during the Soviet period, the Julfa station was a border junction on the way to Iran and handled over 3 million tons of cargo per year. In the future, it is planned to build a direct connection between Nakhchivan and Turkey towards the city of Kars to connect this branch with the Baku - Tbilisi - Kars main. Thus, the Baku - Tbilisi - Kars line will have two routes (via Tbilisi and Nakhchivan). Each new way provides additional opportunities for transport development. Besides, this tour will open a shortcut to the Turkish Port of Mersin in the Mediterranean Sea.
