The Azerbaijani government has taken urgent measures to repatriate its citizens stranded abroad amid the global health crisis, and such actions are still underway, said Spokesperson for the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry Leyla Abdullayeva.

"The government evacuates our citizens even in the ongoing quarantine regime. As you know, a portal has been launched to ensure the return of the Azerbaijani nationals from Russia. The country repatriated 548 citizens in recent weeks, and works are underway to evacuate the rest. However, it should be kept in mind that each evacuee placed up under quarantine upon arrival in the country, and this process is directly related to the preparation of quarantine sites," she said.

"The citizens need to understand that gathering at the border checkpoint is not an option. The Azerbaijani government is arranging the evacuation of its citizens on a scheduled basis following the situation in the country and the preparation of quarantine sites and appropriate logistics," Abdullayeva added.

Earlier, Azerbaijan extended the ongoing border closure until May 31 to curb the spread of the coronavirus.
