TABIB: There is vaccine against monkeypox virus

The monkeypox virus, which has now been reported in several countries, is a type of smallpox. There is much less human-to-human transmission cases, said Nazrin Mustafayeva, head of the Infection Control Organization of the Azerbaijani Management Union of Medical Territorial Units (TABIB), Report informs.

Reminding that the disease was registered in the countries of Central and West Africa, the US, the UK and Portugal, she noted that no cases of infection with the monkeypox virus were detected in Azerbaijan.

“There is a vaccine against this virus. There is no specific treatment. It is considered a disease that goes away on its own within 2-4 weeks,” Mustafayeva said.

She added that due to the very low contagiousness, the likelihood that the virus will cause a pandemic is small: “Locally, in some places it can be observed as an epidemic.”
