Ivan Charnetski, Director of the UNHCR Legal Department, believes that Azerbaijan needs to continue its current practice of granting asylum to foreign citizens, according to Report.
"It is very important that the practice applied in Azerbaijan regarding foreigners and citizens of other countries wishing to seek asylum continues in the future," Charnetsky said at a seminar on "Protecting the rights of foreigners and stateless persons held in institutions they cannot leave of their own free will."
According to him, in many countries around the world, refugees are treated more harshly. He added that in Azerbaijan, unlike many countries in the world, there is no practice of automatic detention of refugees.
