Turkish professor: Serious political processes can take place in Georgia and Armenia in coming days

Serious political processes can take place in Georgia and Armenia in the coming days, Turkish professor Hasan Oktay, head of the Caucasus Strategic Research Center, told Report.

He noted that the focus is currently on the change of the Prime Minister in Georgia and the struggle between Russia and the European Union for control of the region.

The professor also talked about the recent visit of the Prime Minister of Armenia, Nikol Pashinyan, to Georgia and said that this visit may, in a certain sense, be aimed at convincing official Tbilisi that its interests will not be harmed in the peace agreement to be signed with Azerbaijan: “Given the situation in the region, Pashinyan's visit to Georgia, which should normally be regarded as an ordinary visit between two neighboring countries, has now taken on a special significance. Because Georgia is a transit point for goods going to Armenia through Türkiye. The peace treaty that will be signed between Armenia and Azerbaijan will push Georgia aside economically. Therefore, Georgia is closely following this peace process.”

The expert emphasized that after the 44-day war, Türkiye proposed a 3+3 format for discussing and solving regional problems, but Georgia did not participate in this format because of bad relations with Russia: "There are also differences of opinion regarding the views of Iran and Russia in the region. Against this background, in my opinion, it is important to convince Georgia in order to establish lasting peace in the region on a more sound basis. I think Pashiyan discussed these issues during his visit to Georgia.”
