Georgian political scientist: Cooperation on mine clearance is extremely important for GUAM members

Cooperation in the field of mine clearance is extremely important for the member countries of the GUAM, the organization, in which Azerbaijan has assumed the chairmanship this year, Georgian political scientist Simon Kapadze told Report.

“Azerbaijan has already outlined areas of cooperation that it will actively work on during its chairmanship of the organization. Green energy and mine clearance may be the most important areas. All countries included in this organization have painful experience with the mine problem, therefore it is necessary to intensify cooperation in this area," he said.

Kapadze emphasized that there are great prospects for deepening cooperation between Azerbaijan and Georgia within the framework of this platform.

“Besides, I think that after the war in Ukraine ends, it will be quite possible to consider expanding the organization itself,” Kapadze added.

On January 1, 2024, the chairmanship of GUAM passed from Ukraine to Azerbaijan. During Azerbaijan’s last chairmanship of the organization (2020), the priority areas were energy security, transport and trade. The Organization for Democracy and Economic Development (GUAM) was created on October 10, 1997.
