Gafar Cahmagli: Washington Declaration - historic step towards lasting peace in South Caucasus

The agreements reached in Washington and the Azerbaijan-US-Armenia Joint Declaration are undoubtedly a historic step towards lasting peace in the South Caucasus, Professor Gafar Cahmagli of Erciyes University in Türkiye told Report.

He noted that America under Trump can be considered the winner of the geopolitical struggle today: "At this rate, we are witnessing how the United States is taking the place of Russia and Iran in the region. However, it is difficult to say how much this will affect the reduction of tensions in the region. The latest messages from Russia and Iran indicate that Tehran and Moscow do not accept this situation."

The professor said that if the agreements reached in Washington are consistently implemented, this will open up serious prospects for the development of the countries of the region in conditions of peace and stability: "Armenia hopes for this most of all. Prime Minister Pashinyan also presented this agreement as a great success, stating that the peace achieved under the patronage of the United States is a guarantee of Armenia's security. In Armenia, public opinion assesses the Washington agreements as "an opportunity to breathe."
