The decision to transfer the GUAM chairmanship to Azerbaijan was approved at an informal meeting of foreign ministers of the Organization for Democracy and Economic Development (GUAM) held in Brussels, Belgium, Report informs.
The ministers also approved decisions on the budget of GUAM for 2024 and other issues.
Speaking at the meeting, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan, Jeyhun Bayramov, noted that the organization can play an important role in the direction of sustainable peacebuilding and development against the background of current security problems in the world, including in the GUAM region. In this direction, the importance of respect for joint obligations, as well as international legal norms, was emphasized.
Bayramov noted that Azerbaijan supports the solution of the situation around Ukraine within the framework of international legal norms, including the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine.
The minister added that Azerbaijan will spare no effort to promote cooperation between member states in political, security, economic, trade, transport, communications, humanitarian, tourism, and other fields during its chairmanship.
The importance of using the potential of the countries of the region in the field of transport and connections, advancing the GUAM Transport Corridor project in this direction, and turning it into an essential part of the East-West transport corridor was emphasized.
