Martinique’s women continue to fight discrimination and colonialism, Claudette Duhamel, vice-president of the Movement of Environmentalists and Democrats for an Independent Martinique, said at the international conference on “Decolonization: Empowerment and Development of Women,” Report informs.
She emphasized that the women of Martinique suffered the most from France’s colonial policies. They were subjected to sexual violence, slavery, black women were subjected to terrible discrimination, she said.
Duhamel emphasized that women could not participate in the country’s public life and were forced to submit to the system.
This had a negative impact on the political system: women could not take part in decision-making and society did not develop, she added.
