Azerbaijan and Ukraine will hold political consultations at the level of Deputy Foreign Ministers through videoconferencing, Deputy Foreign Minister of Ukraine Vasyl Bodnar told Report.

It was stated at the meeting of the Deputy Minister with the newly appointed Ambassador of Azerbaijan Elmira Akhundova.

"We agreed to organize political consultations at the level of Deputy Ministers in video format. I also thanked the Ambassador for the assistance that Azerbaijan provides in cooperation to counter the coronavirus pandemic."

Azerbaijan and Ukraine started a close friendship with establishing diplomatic relations in 1992 following the dissolution of the Soviet Union. The political, economic, and cultural ties between the two countries are at a very high level. In 2001, the two states founded the Organization For Democracy and Economic Development (GUAM) with Georgia and Moldova. Azerbaijan currently plays an essential role in both organization and the foreign policy of Ukraine due to its strategic position in the region. Azerbaijan also helped Ukraine to shelter the Chernobyl sarcophagus.

Ukraine is one of the leading military partners of Azerbaijan. Azeri officers are trained in Ukrainian military academies, and Ukraine supplies various technical assistance. Ukraine supports Azerbaijan's position in the resolution of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict against Armenia.
