A resolution initiated by Georgia and 61 countries was adopted at the 76th session of the UN General Assembly in New York, Report's local bureau informs citing the statement from the Georgian Foreign Ministry.
The resolution "On the status of IDPs and refugees from Georgia's Abkhazia and Tskhinvali region / South Ossetia" was supported by 95 countries, 12 voted against and 56 abstained.
As in previous years, Azerbaijan and Turkiye supported the resolution submitted by Georgia. Armenia, following their tradition, did not take part in the voting. Russia voted against the resolution.
The Foreign Ministry said that Georgia has been submitting the resolution to the UN General Assembly since 2008: “The resolution condemns the violent demographic changes in Georgia's Russian-occupied territories, affirms the right of IDPs to return home safely, regardless of their ethnicity, and emphasizes the need to respect and protect their rights.”
Georgian Foreign Minister Ilya Darchiashvili thanked all supporters of the humanitarian issue.
It is noteworthy that since 2008, Azerbaijan has been voting in favor of the UN General Assembly resolution on the return of IDPs and refugees who were forced to flee their homes in the occupied territories of Georgia.
