Baku is ready for negotiations, but if Yerevan chooses to delay the process, then Azerbaijan is ready to build a route through Iranian territory, Azerbaijani Presidential Representative for Special Assignments Elchin Amirbayov said in an interview with the BBC Russian service, Report informs.
“We recognize that this is the sovereign territory of Armenia. But it is important for us to know how the other side will ensure the safety of traffic along the corridor. We need reliable guarantees of the safety of every passenger who boards the train from the main part of Azerbaijan to Nakhchivan or vice versa,” he said.
He noted that the next step could be negotiations on the delimitation of the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
“The main question is whether both sides have enough political will to resolve this issue peacefully. We want such a solution as much as we want progress in other areas of bilateral negotiations. I believe that the sooner the border between us is agreed upon, the better. The less likely it will be that any hostilities may resume,” he added.
