Sudan announces plans to stop importing oil

Khartoum seeks to increase oil production and plans to stop importing oil in the future, in particular from South Sudan, Acting Minister of Energy and Oil of Sudan Mohammed Abdullah Mahmoud said, Report informs referring to foreign media.

He noted that in recent years, Khartoum has not been able to increase oil production. Sudan currently produces only 40,000-50,000 barrels a day, which is not enough for local consumption.

“But we are striving to modernize (fields) and increase oil production in order to reach full self-sufficiency and refuse to import oil from South Sudan,” he added.

He noted that the gas reserves in the depths of Sudan will also be enough to fully satisfy the local market in the future, and the rest of the volumes will be exported.

With the separation of South Sudan from Khartoum in 2011, 75% of the oil fields of the once united country went to the South. However, the entire infrastructure for sending oil for export remained in the North.
