Greece can help Europe become independent of Russian natural gas. The country’s government plans to increase purchases of liquefied natural gas (LNG) instead of Russian pipeline gas and is building infrastructure to receive it, Prime Minister of Greece Kyriakos Mitsotakis said at a press conference in Alexandroupolis, Report informs.
He noted that there are plans to build a floating LNG regasification terminal in this city, which is expected to be put into operation in late 2023-early 2024. This will turn Alexandroupolis into an energy hub, he said.
“Greece is becoming a gateway for the supply of natural gas, which covers not only our needs, but also the needs of the Balkans and - why not - Eastern Europe. Why not Ukraine? It is hard to imagine that Ukraine will receive it from Russia, but someone must supply gas,” Mitsotakis said.
