The hydroelectric power plants of Karabakh and Eastern Zangazur, with their high hydroelectric potential, are the main source of clean energy in the region. The electricity needs of these two regions are 100% met by green energy, and the surplus is directed to other regions of the country, Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov wrote in an article published in the Azerbaijan newspaper, Report informs.
"Today, the green energy zone model plays an exceptional role in Azerbaijan's development as a green growth country and in creating green energy spaces by 2026. The strategic decision of the president of Azerbaijan to develop Karabakh and Eastern Zangazur based on the concept of a Green Energy Zone with zero emissions can become an example for other countries in the world. To date, 32 hydroelectric power plants with a total capacity of 270 MW have been put into operation in the region. This means the production of more than 600 million kWh of 'green energy' per year, saving more than 160 million cubic meters of natural gas, and reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions into the atmosphere by more than 330,000 tons," the minister noted.
He added that the action plan for the implementation of the National Strategy for Efficient Use of Water Resources for 2024-2027 provides for the construction of 28 more hydroelectric power plants in these territories, and the construction of six small hydroelectric power plants with a total capacity of 37.5 MW has already begun.
