The outgoing administration of US President Joe Biden plans to ban the development of new offshore oil and gas fields off the Atlantic and Pacific coasts, as well as in the eastern Gulf of Mexico.
Report informs via Bloomberg that, according to their information, new restrictions may be announced on Monday, January 6. They are likely to affect an area of 625 million acres (2.5 million square kilometers). This will be another step by the Biden administration aimed at combating fossil fuel use and greenhouse gases.
The measure could be long-term and make it more difficult for US President-elect Donald Trump to increase oil and gas production in the United States.
During his 2020 US presidential campaign, Biden had already announced plans to completely stop issuing new licenses for oil and gas field development on public lands and offshore. After coming to power, he imposed a moratorium on leasing federal lands for this purpose.
