Kazakhstan fines Caspian Oil $28.8M for hazardous waste storage violations

A court in Kazakhstan has slapped a massive fine of 13.7 billion tenge (over $28.8 million) on Caspian Oil JSC for violating hazardous waste management regulations, according to Report, which cites Prosecutor's Office of the Atyrau Region.

According to the authorities, the oil company failed to obtain the necessary permits to accumulate more than 4,500 tons of hazardous waste generated during its drilling and field operations in 2021-2022.

In response to the violation, the prosecutor's office filed a complaint with the court, citing the company's breach of Article 328 of Kazakhstan's Code of Administrative Offenses, which deals with "Violation of permissible anthropogenic impact standards on the environment."
