Energy transition discussed at scientific conference in Baku

The international scientific-practical conference “POST COP26: sustainable development of Eurasian countries” (following the climatic summit in Glasgow) has started in Baku, organized by the MGIMO (Moscow State Institute of International Relations) Center for Sustainable Development and ESG-Transformation (environmental, social, governance), Report informs.

The conference is being held within the Priority 2030 Strategic Academic Leadership Program of the Russian government.

The partners of the conference were the Azerbaijan State Oil and Industry University, the private Azerbaijan company Caspian Hydrogen Development Group, “Energotransproekt” of the Russian Federation, the Ministry of Energy and the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan.

This is the first international conference of the MGIMO Center for Sustainable Development and ESG-Transformation in the CIS, and its cycle of events on sustainable development started from Baku.

Head of the ESG-Transformation Resource Center and Board Member of the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs Igor Yurgens, who spoke at the conference, told about the energy transition and who bears the burden of costs for the transition to green technologies. Anna Romanovskaya, corresponding member of the Institute of Global Climate and Ecology named after Academician Yu.A. Israel (IGKE) spoke about the pros and cons of the decisions taken at the Glasgow Climate Change Summit.

Rector of the Azerbaijan State Oil and Industry University, member of the International Association of University Presidents Mustafa Babanli presented a report “Prospects for carbon regulation in Azerbaijan.”

The head of the Supervisory Board of Caspian Hydrogen Development, Teymur Abasov, spoke in detail about the development of renewable energy sources and hydrogen energy in Azerbaijan and the problems that need to be addressed in the context of energy transition.

Ruslan Aliyev, director of the Center for Sustainable Development and ESG Transformation at MGIMO, Head of the Department of International Complex Problems of Environmental Management and Ecology at MGIMO, presented his vision of low-carbon development and projects for carbon dioxide absorption.

Igbal Guliyev, deputy director of the International Institute for Energy Policy and Diplomacy at MGIMO, spoke about sustainable energy in the Caspian region.
