Tchakarova: Azerbaijan among key energy partners of US in changing global landscape - EXCLUSIVE

Azerbaijan is one of the key energy partners of the US in the changing global landscape, geopolitical expert and former director of the Austrian Institute for European and Security Policy (AIES) Velina Tchakarova said in an exclusive interview with Report.

Tchakarova also emphasized that Azerbaijan's plans for expanding oil extraction align with broader geopolitical interests, particularly for the United States. With the growing global demand for fossil fuels, Washington views Baku as a critical supplier in ensuring energy security.

"The US administration, especially under its current leadership, favors an expansionist approach to energy production, and Azerbaijan fits well within this framework. Increasing oil output will not only strengthen Azerbaijan’s economic position but also serve American interests by ensuring diversified supply routes that bypass adversarial influence," she stated.

She also emphasized that Azerbaijan is well-positioned to become a key energy partner for both the EU and the US. Against the backdrop of Russia's weakening energy dominance, Baku's ambition to increase gas exports to Europe to 20 billion cubic meters per year by 2027 puts the country at the center of the EU's energy security strategy.

“The Southern Gas Corridor, including the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline and the Trans-Anatolian and Trans-Adriatic pipelines, is a game-changer in diversifying energy routes. This infrastructure not only enhances European energy security but also strengthens Azerbaijan’s geopolitical influence,” she noted.

In her opinion, Azerbaijan's cooperation with major global energy companies, including BP, as well as strategic partnerships with Türkiye and Israel, strengthens its role in global efforts to diversify energy resources.

“Azerbaijan supplies 40% of Israel’s oil and has secured a gas exploration deal with BP, which further solidifies its role in the global energy transition,” Tchakarova stated.

Beyond energy, Azerbaijan plays an important role in global trade and connectivity. The Middle Corridor and the North-South International Transport Corridor strengthen Azerbaijan's position as a strategic transit hub connecting Europe and Asia.

"The government in Baku has demonstrated strategic foresight by investing in key transport and logistics infrastructure, including the Port of Baku and the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway. These initiatives not only improve Azerbaijan’s economic resilience but also contribute to the broader goal of regional stability,” she explained.

As Azerbaijan continues to strengthen its ties with the West, the country is also navigating complex regional security dynamics. Tchakarova pointed out that Azerbaijan has taken decisive steps to counter external influence operations that aim to undermine its sovereignty. The recent closure of the Russian House in Baku is a testament to Azerbaijan’s commitment to safeguarding its national interests.

The expert also emphasized the importance of maintaining cybersecurity to protect Azerbaijan's critical infrastructure, especially in the energy and financial sectors.

“Azerbaijan must remain vigilant against hybrid threats, including disinformation campaigns and cyberattacks, which could seek to disrupt its strategic advancements,” she noted.

As global geopolitical and economic dynamics shift, Azerbaijan continues to assert itself as a reliable energy partner and strategic regional player. With increasing investment in infrastructure, strong diplomatic engagements, and a commitment to regional stability, Baku is shaping a future that strengthens its position on the global stage.
