Women and girls in Azerbaijan, who historically have had broad access to education and academic activities, have achieved remarkable success in science, including leadership positions, said Tofig Musayev, Azerbaijan's Permanent Representative to the UN, Report informs.
He made the remark at an event organized at UN headquarters on the occasion of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.
The diplomat stated that the Azerbaijani government continues its efforts to increase women's and girls' participation in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) through implementing special programs and strengthening inter-ministerial cooperation to promote gender equality in higher education and scientific research.
"Women who want to work in STEM fields are receiving increasing support through scholarships aimed at reducing financial barriers. Seminars and mentoring programs are being implemented in close cooperation with educational institutions and NGOs to protect gender equality, providing guidance and support to girls throughout their academic journey," Musayev noted.
Musayev also said that international partnerships, including programs aimed at developing technical skills for women and girls, also play a key role in this area:
"We have held several international events to expand young women's and girls' activities in science. Azerbaijan is fortunate to have many prominent women scientists who have made significant contributions to enhancing women's role in scientific research."
Notably, Azerbaijani women are increasing their prestige year by year with their achievements in science and education, healthcare and culture, as well as other fields. It is no coincidence that Azerbaijan has been declared the World Capital of Women and Girls in Science by the Royal Academy of Science International Trust (RASIT) for one year (September 2024 - September 2025).
During this period, various activities are planned to be implemented in the country to increase women's and girls' research capabilities, inform university students about various research grants and scholarships in science, and guide girls studying in regions towards science.
