Scientists have predicted giant tsunamis as a result of glacier melting in Antarctica, following the findings of their latest research.

According to Report, the study’s results have been published in the journal Nature.

Experts concluded that underwater landslides triggered by climate change could generate massive waves.

Researchers drilled cores from the seabed and discovered loose sediment layers that had previously caused massive ocean waves. These waves reached the shores of South America, New Zealand, and Southeast Asia.

According to scientists, these layers were formed around three to fifteen million years ago, when the water temperature around Antarctica was three degrees Celsius higher than it is today. Dying phytoplankton accumulated into a slippery sediment that could have triggered landslides.

Experts have warned that ongoing global warming continues to affect Antarctic glaciers, increasing the risk of underwater disasters.
