International Day of Caspian Sea celebrated today

International Day of the Caspian Sea is an environmental date celebrated on August 12 by five Caspian states: Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia and Turkmenistan, Report informs.

This event is designed to draw public attention to the environmental problems of the sea.

On August 12, 2006, the Tehran Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the Caspian came into force, since then this day has been celebrated as the International Day of the Caspian Sea.

The Framework Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the Caspian Sea, also known as the "Tehran Convention", was adopted in the city of Tehran in 2003. The Tehran Convention is the first legally binding regional agreement signed by all five Caspian countries and contains general requirements for the protection of the environment of the Caspian region and provides for the creation of the necessary institutional mechanisms for this.

In 1998, in order to prevent the deterioration of the environmental conditions of the Caspian Sea and promote the sustainable development of the region, to ensure the well-being of the coastal population for a long period, the Caspian Environment Program (CEP), an extensive regional program, was established.
