Elnur Safarov: Changes in regional wind flows affect movement of air masses

Changes in regional wind flows are affecting the movement of air masses and pollution in the Caspian region, Elnur Safarov, Senior Research Fellow at the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan, said during the event "Clean Air and Green Infrastructure for Sustainable Cities" held within the framework of World Urban Forum 13 in Baku.

Report quotes him as saying studies have shown changes in the dominant wind directions over the Caspian Sea.

"Eastern wind flows have begun displacing northern ones," he said.

Safarov noted that air masses from Central Asia have become more active in affecting the region.

"Winds coming from Central Asia are becoming dominant over the surface of the Caspian Sea," he added.
