An evening in memory of hundreds of innocent victims of the events of January 20, 1990, in Baku, when Soviet troops were brought into the city to suppress peaceful protests, was held in Israel, Report informs referring to the AzIz Azerbaijan-Israel International Association.

Afula deputy mayor, Boris Yudis, city council member Gennady Kipnis and other employees of the municipality came to commemorate the victims of January 20.

AzIz President Lev Spivak noted that the victims of the January events of 1990 in Baku were innocent people of various nationalities, among whom were Jews who gave their lives for freedom and democracy in Azerbaijan.

Famous Israeli journalist David Kohn (Vadim Korsh) presented his book “The Karabakh trap” - notes of an eyewitness of the beginning of the conflict, about how the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict began. The events described in Kohn’s book led to the tragedy known as “Black January,” when more than 200 people were killed and injured in Baku in one night.

Presenting his book, Kohn said that he wrote only about what he saw and heard, in which he took part. Describing those terrible events, he added that if such a strong politician as Heydar Aliyev had been in power at that time, nothing like this would have happened in Azerbaijan.

According to the author of the book, when he was a novice journalist in the 80s, he repeatedly met with the then First Secretary of Azerbaijan, Heydar Aliyev. The journalist told how a wise and sensitive person, an extraordinary and talented politician was Heydar Aliyev, who was attentive to both creative people and professionals in various fields.
