The HS (Harmonized System) subcommittee of the World Customs Organization (WCO) is developing new provisions to increase the visibility of environmentally significant goods in the global customs classification system, stated Gael Grooby, Acting Director of Tariff and Trade Affairs at WCO, Report informs.
During the event titled "Green Customs - Dialogue of Leading Customs Officials," held within the framework of COP29, Grooby emphasized that this initiative will pave the way for future trade opportunities for governments.
She mentioned, "In conjunction with the Basel Convention and Montreal Protocol, seminars are being organized to train instructors, new procedures are being developed for the safe storage and transportation of hazardous waste, and online training sessions are being conducted on the classification of plastic waste. The participation of customs and the World Customs Organization (WCO) in climate discussions at COP29 significantly supports this initiative."
