Water envoy: Water sector hit hardest by climate change

Climate change is making its most profound impact in the water sector, according to Meike van Ginneken, Dutch Special Envoy for Water, Report informs.

Speaking at the event themed "Water Action: Water Solutions for Climate Action," held as a part of COP29, van Ginneken highlighted the increasing risks of flooding and drought.

"We witnessed the driest October on record in cities like Valencia and Barcelona, and the situation is no different in New York," she noted. "While we see more news about flood disasters, drought is a slow-onset disaster that claims even more human lives. We need to address this issue more deeply."

The water envoy emphasized that many of the problems discussed at COP are water-related. "That is why we must see water as part of the solution and make it a driving force for climate adaptation. We have the necessary elements for this, but we must act together on this issue," she urged.
