There are five important points in the COP29 Declaration on reducing methane from organic waste, Inger Andersen, United Nations (UN) Deputy Secretary-General and Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) told a COP29 event on "Reducing methane gas from organic waste for climate action," Report informs.
According to the declaration, Andersen said, first, the opportunities for waste optimization should be emphasized in National Contribution Statements: "The next point is strengthening regulations and incentives, adopting best practices that include initiatives learned from Japan's example, business efforts, and policy incentives. The third point is understanding information about waste sources and how they are managed. It should be noted that data varies from country to country. The fourth point is the need for funding, particularly in solid waste management. The final point is increasing cooperation and exchanging experiences."
The UNEP official noted that by reducing methane from organic waste, it's possible to protect the health of communities living near landfills, ensure groundwater safety, reduce methane emissions, and realize the potential of producing energy from this waste.
