Special Envoy: EU reduced methane emissions from waste by 44%

Reducing methane emissions from organic waste is a priority for the European Union, EU Special Envoy for Climate and Environmental Diplomacy Tony Agotha said at a COP29 event titled "Reducing Methane from Organic Waste for Climate Action," Report informs.

"The implementation of waste legislation in the EU between 1990 and 2022 led to a reduction in methane emissions in the waste sector by approximately 44% compared to 1990. I believe this shows the possibility of achieving progress in this area. The EU prioritizes waste prevention first, then preparation for reuse, recycling, and other forms of recovery. The EU considers disposal only as a last resort, this is the foundation of our circular economy," Agotha emphasized.

According to him, a separate collection of organic waste is also an opportunity to earn money: "We can value it as biogas. The waste generated during biogas production can be used as fertilizer. This allows reducing the use of fossil-based chemicals."
