Azerbaijan's Ambassador to Mexico, Mammad Talibov, delivered a keynote speech on Azerbaijan's hosting of COP29 at the PreCOP29 Meeting for Climate Action event organized by the Mexico Climate Initiative, Report informs, referring to the Azerbaijani embassy in Mexico.
In his speech, the ambassador expressed delight at Azerbaijan being selected to host the prestigious COP29 in a few days. He noted that this is a clear example of Azerbaijan's leadership in combating climate change, one of humanity's most critical issues, at the national, regional, and global levels.
The diplomat emphasized that Azerbaijan has made green development its top development priority, declaring the current year as the "Green World Solidarity Year." He added that today, Azerbaijan is a regional leader in the transition to green energy, prioritizing green projects within the country in recent years.
Talibov further stated that extensive work is being done to create smart cities and villages in Azerbaijan’s liberated territories.
“The Karabakh and East Zangazur economic zones, as well as the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, will become net zero emission zones by 2050. By 2030, the share of renewable energy in the country's total energy balance will reach at least 30%.”
Recalling the urgency and importance of climate change, which knows no borders and affects all countries, he spoke about the necessity of international cooperation for an effective solution to this global problem.
The ambassador mentioned several initiatives put forward by Azerbaijan within the framework of the COP29 Presidency, emphasizing that the main goal of these initiatives is to advance climate action, encourage the active participation of stakeholders, increase ambitions to combat climate change, and give impetus to activities on this topic.
In this regard, Talibov called on both governmental and non-governmental organizations to join these global initiatives put forward by the COP29 Presidency.
