Azerbaijan's COP29 presidency launches series of climate declarations and commitments

Azerbaijan's presidency of the 29th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) has presented a series of new initiatives, declarations and commitments aimed at strengthening ambitions and accelerating actions to combat climate change, reads a letter from COP29 President-designate Mukhtar Babayev, which outlines the final versions of nine declarations and commitments as part of the presidency program for the upcoming UN climate summit in Baku, Report informs.

These documents are intended to contribute to the process of increasing climate commitments of all parties. The presented initiatives include a call for a COP29 truce; commitments on global energy storage and power grids, on green energy zones and corridors, on hydrogen; declarations on green digital actions, reducing methane emissions from organic waste, etc.

They cover key climate action priorities and draw attention to forgotten areas. The COP29 presidency calls on all countries and non-state actors to join these declarations and commitments to strengthen confidence in the climate process and ensure the fulfillment of past obligations.

Many initiatives build on existing commitments to maintain momentum, the letter says. The call for a COP29 truce has already mobilized 127 countries and nearly 1,100 non-state actors, for which the presidency expressed gratitude.

"The presidency calls on all parties to work together to make the conference successful and achieve significant progress in global climate action. Strengthening ambitions and setting clear goals is key to effectively combating climate change," reads the letter.
