Georgian political scientist: NATO wants Azerbaijan-Armenia peace treaty to be signed in Tbilisi

Georgian political scientist Levan Mamaladze considers Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, as one of the real venues for signing a peace treaty between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

In an interview with the local bureau of Report, he said that NATO can play an active role in the process of signing the document between Baku and Yerevan in Tbilisi.

The expert said that NATO Deputy Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs and Security Policy and Special Representative for the Caucasus and Central Asia, Javier Colomina, welcomed the progress of relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia towards peace: "Most likely, Tbilisi is being prepared as a place for the signing of the peace treaty. His visit to Georgia clearly shows that the Alliance is more interested in this region. Georgia's military system works in accordance with NATO standards, which means that neighboring countries will also have the opportunity to cooperate more closely with the Euro-Atlantic Alliance."

Mamaladze said that it is necessary to pay attention to Russia's position against the background of what is happening: "By taking such steps, Georgia is also taking big risks. Because NATO's activity in the region is against Moscow's interests. In such a case, Russia will try to make this cooperation impossible. Next year, a new cooperation with NATO will be launched."

The political scientist also said that immediately after receiving the status of a candidate for the European Union, Georgia took more actions in the direction of NATO: "The alliance now intends to sign new projects in the South Caucasus region. The organization wants to have power in the South Caucasus, taking into account the new realities. For this, it officially cooperates with Tbilisi and wants to intensify relations and implement projects."
