ADB announces problems in Azerbaijan’s agrarian sector

Some problems, which prevent the use of rural potential at a maximum level, are still sensitive, Report says, citing ADB’s Review titled 'Agriculture Development Trends in the Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation Program Member Countries: Challenges and Opportunities.'

According to the Review, weak and undeveloped irrigation infrastructure represents the problem that prevents the use of agricultural potential to a maximum level. Moreover, farmers lack the required training and knowledge for the improvement of sowing techniques. The country is sensitive to the effects of climate change, especially floods and drought. Also lacking are the financial assets for research in the rural sector.

According to the State Statistical Committee of Azerbaijan, agriculture grew by 7.1% in eleven months of 2019. Meanwhile, 3.2 million tonnes of grain were gathered in the reporting period. Cocoon production made up 634,000 tonnes, while cotton production reached 295,000 tonnes.
