World food commodity prices rose in January, mainly due to a reduced supply of vegetable oils, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Report informs referring to TASS.
The average value of the FAO Food Price Index, which reflects monthly changes in international prices for basic foodstuffs, was 135.7 points in January, which is 1.1% higher than in December.
The price index for vegetable oils increased by 4.2%, reaching an all-time high.
Price indices for cereals, dairy products and meat also rose last month. The sugar price index was the only indicator that fell by 3.1% in January compared to the previous month, “including due to favorable production forecasts in key exporting countries - India and Thailand.”
