The agrarian reforms implemented in Azerbaijan in the 1990s laid the foundation of the achievements in that field today, MP Azer Amiraslanov, Chairman of the Committee for Economic Policy, Industries and Enterprising at the Milli Majlis (Parliament) of Azerbaijan, said, Report informs.
Amiraslanov noted that special initiatives were put forward regarding the development of agriculture and the agrarian sector in the subsequent period:
"We can divide the process in this field into two parts: until 2007 and the period after that. After 2007, for the first time in the country, grain consumers were subsidized. Currently, approximately 40 percent of the population in Azerbaijan are employed in agriculture, the agrarian sector.
From that perspective, agriculture is an important field for us, as this sector ensures food security. During the mentioned period, Azerbaijan has never faced a food security risk."
