While population growth generally has a positive impact on countries' economies, it also has negative effects on some sectors, such as agriculture, Niyazi Amirbayov, the CEO of Agro Dairy LLC, told a panel session held as part of the Baku Climate Action Week, Report informs.
Amirbayov noted that Azerbaijan's population has already exceeded 10 million, which poses a serious challenge for the country's agriculture.
"At first glance, population growth seems beneficial for the sector. While it creates great opportunities for business, there is also a downside which is the reduction and scarcity of resources, where the impact of climate change is undeniable," the executive director added.
He emphasized that one of the main tasks of the agricultural sector is to manufacture more products while minimizing greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere.
Amirbayov stated that irrigation systems should be modernized because water is a very valuable resource.
