Azerbaijan took part in the 122nd session of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) Executive Council held in Cartagena, Colombia, on November 13-15.
According to Report, citing Azerbaijan State Tourism Agency, the session, chaired by Saudi Arabia, saw the participation of over 31 member states.
Jalil Malikov, Deputy Chief of Staff and Head of the International Relations Department of the State Tourism Agency, represented Azerbaijan at the event.
During the session, detailed information was provided to the participants about the ongoing COP29 hosted by Azerbaijan, as well as the inclusion of tourism in the thematic program of COP29 for the first time, in collaboration with the COP Presidency, the State Tourism Agency, and UNWTO.
Participating countries were invited to join the declaration, which is expected to be adopted at the conclusion of the First High-Level Ministerial Meeting on Enhanced Climate Action in Tourism, organized within the framework of COP29 Tourism Day Events.
Moreover, the member states of the UNWTO Executive Council were invited to participate in the 71st session of the UNWTO Regional Commission for Europe, which will be hosted by Azerbaijan in the first half of 2025. It was also noted that Azerbaijan has nominated itself for one of the seats allocated to the European region on the UNWTO Executive Council for 2025-2029, emphasizing the importance of support from member states during the relevant voting.
In his report, UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili congratulated Azerbaijan on the high-level organization of COP29 and highlighted its significant role in enhancing the reputation not only of the Caucasus but the entire region.
At the end of the session, Brazil was elected as the Chair of the UNWTO Executive Council for 2025.
