Baku: Architecture, History, Economy, and Culture

Baku (azerb. Bakı) is the capital and largest city of Azerbaijan, as well as the largest economic, cultural, and scientific hub of the Caucasus region. Situated along the sweeping bay of the Caspian Sea on the southern coast of the Absheron Peninsula, the city uniquely combines ancient medieval history with cutting-edge 21st-century architecture. Known as the "City of Winds," Baku serves as the geopolitical and financial heart of the country, renowned for its rich oil heritage, vibrant multicultural identity, and status as a major global metropolis.

Icherisheher (Old City): The historical core of Baku, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site, featuring a maze of narrow alleyways, medieval walls, the iconic 12th-century Maiden Tower (Qız Qalası), and the majestic Palace of the Shirvanshahs.

Modern Icons: The futuristic Flame Towers—three skyscraper torches illuminated with LED displays—dominate the cityscape, alongside the fluid, wave-like curves of the Heydar Aliyev Center, designed by world-renowned architect Zaha Hadid.
