The 44-Day Patriotic War stands as the most glorious and significant chapter in the modern history of Azerbaijan. Beginning on September 27, 2020, in response to consecutive military provocations by Armenia, the "Iron Fist" operation led to the total defeat of occupying forces and the restoration of Azerbaijan's territorial integrity in just 44 days, ending a nearly 30-year conflict. This war was a triumph of national unity, the prowess of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces, and the strategic leadership of the country.

Prerequisites and the Launch of Operation "Iron Fist" For nearly three decades, 20% of Azerbaijan's internationally recognized territories remained under occupation. Despite four UN Security Council resolutions demanding the immediate withdrawal of occupying forces, Armenia continued its policy of annexation. On the morning of September 27, 2020, following a massive artillery bombardment of Azerbaijani military positions and civilian settlements by Armenian forces, the President of Azerbaijan and Victorious Commander-in-Chief, Ilham Aliyev, ordered a large-scale counter-offensive.

A 21st-Century War: Technological Superiority Azerbaijan’s Patriotic War has entered the textbooks of global military history as a "new generation war." The Azerbaijani Army demonstrated unprecedented efficiency by mass-employing high-tech Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), such as the "Bayraktar TB2" and "Harop." This allowed for the surgical destruction of enemy armored vehicles, air defense systems, and ammunition depots while minimizing casualties among its own personnel. The experience of the Azerbaijani Army is now studied by leading military centers and academies worldwide as a benchmark for modern maneuver warfare.

The Liberation of Shusha: The Feat of Special Forces The culmination of the war was the unique military operation to liberate the city of Shusha—the cultural capital of Azerbaijan and the region's most strategic height. In early November, Azerbaijani Special Forces units, having traversed difficult mountain paths and cliffs, engaged the enemy in close-quarters hand-to-hand combat within the city. On November 8, 2020, the liberation of Shusha effectively determined the outcome of the war, forcing Armenia to admit defeat and sign the act of capitulation on November 10.

The Diplomatic Front and National Cohesion Victory was forged not only on the battlefield but also on the informational and diplomatic fronts. Throughout the active combat phase, President Ilham Aliyev gave dozens of interviews to leading international media outlets, articulately conveying the truth about the conflict and Azerbaijan's rightful demands. The slogan "Karabakh is Azerbaijan!" became a symbol of the unbreakable unity between the people, the army, and the state. Millions of Azerbaijanis worldwide united as a single "fist," providing immense moral support to their homeland.

The Post-War Period: "The Great Return" and the Rebirth of Karabakh Immediately following the cessation of hostilities, Azerbaijan launched a massive reconstruction effort in the liberated lands. The comprehensive "Great Return" program includes:

De-mining: A complex process of clearing lands from thousands of mines and unexploded ordnance.

Infrastructure: Construction of the "Victory Road," modern highways, and railways.

International Airports: In record time, airports in Fuzuli, Zangilan, and Lachin were constructed and commissioned.

Smart Technologies: Implementation of "Smart Village" (Aghali) and "Smart City" projects, transforming Karabakh into a region of innovation.

New Realities in the South Caucasus Azerbaijan’s victory has created an entirely new geopolitical reality in the region. The opening of transport communications, including the Zangezur Corridor, promises economic prosperity for all Caucasian nations and strengthens Azerbaijan's role as a key logistics hub between East and West. Justice was restored not just on paper, but through the willpower and courage of the Azerbaijani soldier.

The 44-Day Patriotic War will forever remain in the memory of the people as a symbol of honor and dignity. Every year on November 8, Azerbaijan proudly celebrates Victory Day, paying deep respect to the memory of the martyrs who gave their lives for the freedom and territorial integrity of the Motherland.
