Those responsible for the armed attack on the Azerbaijani embassy in Iran must be held accountable, John Feffer, director of Foreign Policy in Focus at the Institute for Policy Studies (US), told Report.
“The incident is of course tragic. And all events of this nature - which includes murder - should be prosecuted according to the laws of the country in which the incidents take place.
There have been considerable tensions recently between Iran and Azerbaijan. I think it is very important that this recent incident does not escalate these tensions to the level of actual military conflict between the two countries,” he noted.
A gunman stormed the Azerbaijani embassy in Iran, killing the head of the embassy’s security service on January 27. Two other officers of the security service were wounded while resisting the attack. Their condition is satisfactory.
The attacker was detained by employees of the Azerbaijani embassy.
