Casualties among civilians in Ukraine from February 24, when Russia began the military actions of Ukraine, to 24:00 on March 8 amounted to 1,424 people, including 516 dead, Report informs, citing the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.

OHCHR believes the real numbers are much higher, especially in government-controlled territory, and particularly in recent days, as information from some areas of intense fighting has been delayed and many reports are still awaiting confirmation.

According to OHCHR, this applies, for example, to Volnovakha, Mariupol, Izium, where hundreds of civilians were reportedly killed or injured. They are subject to further verification and are not included in the above statistics.

The majority of civilian deaths or injuries were caused by the use of explosive devices with a wide area of effect, including shelling from heavy artillery and multiple launch rocket systems, as well as rocket and airstrikes.

According to confirmed UN data, 98 men, 60 women, 9 boys and 5 girls died, while the sex of 23 children and 321 adults has not yet been confirmed.

Among the 908 injured are 12 girls and 4 boys, as well as 34 children, whose gender has not yet been confirmed.

OHCHR points out that in Donetsk and Luhansk regions, as of midnight March 9, there were 87 dead and 349 injured in government-controlled territory, and 24 dead and 113 injured in territory controlled by the self-proclaimed "republics".

In other regions of Ukraine under government control (Kyiv, as well as in Zhytomyr, Zaporizhzhia, Sumy, Odesa, Mykolaiv, Kharkiv, Kherson, Cherkasy and Chernihiv regions), the UN recorded 405 dead and 446 wounded.

The summary also states that, according to the Ukrainian Presidential Commissioner for Children's Rights and Child Rehabilitation, as of 24:00 on March 8, 41 children had died and 76 were injured in government-controlled territories.

In addition, OHCHR notes the report of the National Police of the Kharkiv region, according to which, as of 18:00 on March 8, 170 civilians were killed in the region, including 5 children, and 368 people were injured.
